Extraction:

Executioners were often inmates of the gaol itself who took on the task of executioner in return for special privileges.

In 1821 the executioner was Thomas Halfpenny who had been convicted of pig stealing.

 

The gaoler received any expenses incurred to him in the execution of men-in 1814 he received the sum of £15.
